A Little About Me
Delicate Flower Studio, LLC is a family business, owned by myself and my spouse. We have lived in Claremore, Oklahoma for about 15 years. We have two adult sons with special needs. Our oldest son is starting to learn some of the production processes for the business. I have been creating things since my grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 7. Besides the business, I also teach crochet classes. Delicate Flower Studio opened in 2020- just before the world started shutting down. Not a great time to start a business! I had been making custom tote bags, zippered pouches, mugs, etc. for friends and to sell in my friend’s yarn shop in Tulsa. I started getting more orders and interest in my designs by word of mouth. I started selling online soon afterwards. But my favorite way to sell is face to face and I love doing custom orders. I started out doing items with permanent vinyl (decals, mugs) and heat transfer vinyl (t-shirts, aprons). As customers asked for different items, I added them to my shop. Customers liked my mugs, but the vinyl ones are not dishwasher safe, so many people do not want to buy them. So, I learned how to do sublimation-which makes the mugs dishwasher safe- and it has opened a whole new world of design possibilities. I have recently added tumblers and other items.
What is sublimation?
In simple terms, it’s a method of printing that transfers a design into a specially coated item (mug, tumbler, etc.) or fabric using ink and heat. The effects are permanent and less prone to fading, as the ink is embedded in the fabric or other item rather than simply laying on top. The process allows the ink to go from a solid to a gas without turning to liquid. The conversion is initiated by heat and controlled by pressure.
What are some of the pros? Full color images that won’t crack or flake with washing. Mugs that are dishwasher and microwave safe.
And the cons: When sublimation is done on fabric (clothing, tote bags, etc) it must be 100% polyester for the best color results. Polyester blends can be used but the colors may not be as vibrant and may fade.
Sublimation works best on a white base.
Q: Can you make me an orange t-shirt with sublimation?
A: Unfortunately I can’t. Think of it like this: if I had an orange piece of paper and tried drawing on it with an orange marker- you wouldn’t be able to make out my drawing very well. Same marker on a white background would be very visible.
